What do you mean 'generation'?
The iPod has progressed over the years and during this time the shape, appearance, controls, and other features have changed. Certain modifications are only available on certain iPods, or limited on others. This page will help you determine your iPod's generation.
iPod classic
1st/2nd Generation
Distinctive features:
- The 1st generation iPod has a mechanical wheel (it rotates).
- The 2nd generation iPod has a touch-sensitive wheel.
- Buttons encircle the wheel.
- The top of the iPod has a FireWire port (2), a larger hold switch (4), and other ports as labeled (figure 2).
- Grey-scale screen.
- It is possible to change the boot Apple logo through iPodWizard graphics editing.
- 5/10/20gb capacity.
- Shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2

3rd Generation
Distinctive features:
- Four buttons that run across the middle between the screen and the wheel.
- Dock Connector port introduced.
- New back-lit touch-sensitive buttons introduced.

Distinctive features:
