What do you mean 'generation'?

The iPod has progressed over the years and during this time the shape, appearance, controls, and other features have changed. Certain modifications are only available on certain iPods, or limited on others. This page will help you determine your iPod's generation.

Distinctive features:

  • The 1st generation iPod has a mechanical wheel (it rotates).
  • The 2nd generation iPod has a touch-sensitive wheel.
  • Buttons encircle the wheel.
  • The top of the iPod has a FireWire port (2), a larger hold switch (4), and other ports as labeled (figure 2).
  • Grey-scale screen.
  • It is possible to change the boot Apple logo through iPodWizard graphics editing.
  • 5/10/20gb capacity.
  • Shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2

3rd Generation

Distinctive features:

  • Four buttons that run across the middle between the screen and the wheel.
  • Dock Connector port introduced.
  • New back-lit touch-sensitive buttons introduced.

  • 10/15/20/30/40gb capacity.
  • Shown in Figure 3

4th Generation

Distinctive features:

  • New click wheel.
  • Grey-scale screen on initial revision shown in Figure 4.
  • U2 edition of initial revision released - black and red casing, band signatures shown in Figure 5.
  • Colour screen model (second revision) shown in Figure 6.
  • 20/40gb capacity on initial revision.

Colour Screen Model

Distinctive features:

  • Introduced in October 2004, entitled iPod Photo.
  • Replaced the initial 4G revision in June 2005, entitled iPod Photo/Colour.

  • Shown in Figure 6

5th Generation

Distinctive features:

  • Slimmer design, white or black casing.
  • Colour, wide screen.
  • Video support (hence the nickname "iPod Video").

5.5G Revision

Distinctive features:

  • Introduced September 12th, 2006.
  • Brighter display.
  • Longer battery life.
  • Music search function.
  • Ability to play games from the Apple store.

  • Same basic design of the original 5G iPod as in Figure 7.

6th Generation

Distinctive features:

  • Slimmer design, white or black anodized casing.
  • Introduced the 'classic' suffix to the line previously known simply as the 'iPod' - hence the nickname of "iPod Classic".
  • Updated interface with Coverflow support.
  • Video support.
  • Longer battery life.
  • 80/160gb capacity.
  • Shown in Figure 8

iPod mini

  • Smaller size.

  • Grey-scale screen.
  • 5 casing colours.

  • New clip-like design.

  • Similar functionalities to iPhone (except for phone connectivity, camera, etc.)
  • Wi-Fi (802.11g).
