Forced Disk Mode

Overview

When a problem occurs with your iPod, it's sometimes helpful to force it into Disk Mode. If you're not sure which iPod generation you have, click here.

Note: After an iPod is placed into Disk Mode, resetting it will return it to its normal state.

Putting iPod into Disk Mode

The following steps apply only if you have an iPod with a click wheel.

  1. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons. The iPod will restart and the Apple logo will appear.
  2. When you see the Apple logo appear, press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons. Your iPod should now say Disk Mode and look similar to the iPod in the picture.
  3. At this point you will can connect the iPod to your computer to further work on the solution to your problem. The screen of the iPod should now say "Do not disconnect."

If your iPod doesn’t go directly into disk mode, repeat the steps listed. It might also help to wait about two seconds after the apple logo appears before you press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons.

Other iPods

This section is for:

  1. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons on your iPod. Your ipod will restart and the Apple/iPod logo should appear.
  2. When you see the Apple logo appear, press and hold the Previous and Next buttons. Your iPod should now say Disk Mode and look somewhat similar to the iPod in the picture above.
  3. At this point you will can connect the iPod to your computer to further work on the solution to your problem. The screen of the iPod should now say "Do not disconnect."
