Overview
The idea behind the brushed metal look is that you physically modify the shiny back of the iPod so it becomes grainy and appears to be brushed.
In doing this you can either brush away scratches, or you can make an original and special modification. Several people have done designs such as creating flames or the logo for the band Korn. To see how they did it, use the links below:

Method
There are several methods to get this look. Almost all of them work. The main difference between methods is the end result. Not if it looks good or bad, just how the grain of the brush appears.
Sponge method
The first and most used method is the sponge method. This is done by taking a coarse sponge to the back of your iPod and either using a stencil or brushing the whole back. Run it back and forth until you obtain the desired gradient and direction of the grain. You can find detailed and pictured instructions here.
Sandpaper method
This method leaves a lot more room for error and allows a broader range of grain size. After you have the grade you want, then use the sponge method.
Stencils
Stencils can be used to create designs on the iPod. The best place to learn about stencils is here.
Warning
Note! Be careful not to scratch away the serial number on the bottom on the iPod, or if you do write it down somewhere first (Apple will ask you for this for proof of purchase if your ipod dies on you)
