If they are not showing up on the ipod besides the root folder you are pretty much out of luck. I had the same problem and spent about 3 hours looking and couldnt find anything.

you dont have to download anything
the files are hidden follow these steps if you still need help: go to my computer> open ipod (E: ) then go to the toolbar in the folder tools>folder options once that is open go to view tab>find on the list 'view hidden files' and select open 'ipod control' folder>open 'music'> drag and save onto computer the songs are all in a 4 letter format, but when you re-load them into itunes, the names will be there. |

Well sounds like you been trying free programs but most of them dont work that well if you are really serious wanting back the songs to your computer I recommend you use Virtual iPod and it only $14 you can get a copy at HERE and it really works very well

you will need to have a 3rd party tool to help you copy songs in your ipod to computer as itunes blocks the ipod-to-computer transfer...see http://www.ipodtocomputer.net for help..get ipod to computer transfer, it's a shareware cost $20..it can copy songs, videos and playlists from ipod to pc only 2 clicks, works great for me.
