 iPod Classic -- Touch?
Jun 19, 2008 - 4:38 PM - by iPodTuner

Apple patents cheap, relatively small touch screens. This leaves many people wondering what Apple might go for to boost sale for it's lower-end iPod models.

From: MacNN

Quote:
Apple’s patent FIGS. 3a and 3b illustrate an exemplary mobile telephone (336) and an exemplary digital audio player (338). The audio player figure is clearly illustrating a smaller windowed iPod like Apple’s iPod Classic. The mobile telephone and digital audio player of FIGS. 3a and 3b can advantageously benefit from the

Apple Considering 'Free' Access to iTunes Library
Apr 23, 2008 - 9:30 AM - by podmodder
Apple is talking with the major record labels about a change in the iTunes Store business model that would give customers free access to the store's complete music library, according to the Financial Times. The catch is that consumers would pay a premium for Apple's iPod and iPhone devices.
The rumored model is akin to the "Comes with Music" deal Nokia inked with Universal Music last December. Apple could not immediately be reached for comment, but the British newspaper reported the negotiations hinged on a dispute over the price Apple would pay for access to the labels' libraries.

"Rumors of Apple getting into the 'all you can eat' music business have been around almost as long as the iPod itself," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at JupiterResearch. "The real challenge that Apple would face is taking this from something that appeals to music aficionados to something the mainstream could appreciate."

Apple Buys Chip Maker PA Semi
Apr 23, 2008 - 9:24 AM - by podmodder
Apple revealed late on Tuesday that it has agreed to buy PA Semi, a company that designs embedded microprocessors. Sources close to the deal said the transaction cost the Mac, iPhone and iPod maker US$278 million in cash, according to Forbes.
Apple spokesman Steve Dowling stated "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not comment on our purposes and plans."

Even though Apple isn't commenting on its plans for PA Semi, it seems possible that it could be considering using the chip maker's designs for upcoming products that rely on embedded processors, like new iPods or even the iPhone. If so, that could spell bad news for Intel and its push to convince Apple that the iPhone should be based on its chip sets.

Apple could also be considering licensing the... [Read More]

 Apple...Patents...Lasers?
Apr 17, 2008 - 6:47 PM - by iPodTuner

Apple files for patents on laser-based head-mounted displays.

What are we in for next?

From: AppleInsider
Read original Patent (US P&T Office).

A new series of patent filings by Apple outlines attempts to modernize head-mounted displays (HMDs) that can be plugged into iPods or iPhones by decoupling the image generation components from the headsets themselves, which would pave the way for more lightweight and comfortable designs.
